Frequently Asked Questions

As a helpful resource, we have compiled the following list of FAQs relating to the correctional health care industry and our company in particular. Please contact us if you have additional questions.

General Questions:

What is NaphCare?
Incorporated in Birmingham, Alabama in 1989, NaphCare has been providing health care services exclusively to correctional facilities for more that 19 years. NaphCare currently employs more than 600 dedicated health care professionals in 19 states.

What kind of health care services does NaphCare provide?
NaphCare provides comprehensive health, mental health, dental and pharmaceutical services, nephrology services, (including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and nephrology consults, to inmates with End Stage Renal Disease), off-site care and specialty medical services for inmates in a number of Federal correctional facilities, and we establish and maintain third-party provider networks for these facilities.

Prospective Client Questions:

Why should my facility consider privatizing health care?
For governmental entities facing budget cuts while trying to provide the constitutionally mandated level of care, the privatization of correctional health care programs through the competitive bidding process is becoming more and more attractive. If implemented correctly, managed care systems promote efficiency, reduce unnecessary costs by eliminating unneeded services, and promote preventive health care. In addition to these benefits from managed care, privatization offers governmental entities the chance to transfer most legal liability associated with the provision of health care to a private contractor.

What makes NaphCare different from the other correctional health care providers?

Our professional liability (medical malpractice) policy is with RSUI (Landmark American Insurance Company). RSUI Indemnity Company and Landmark American, the companies of RSUI Group, Inc., are rated "A XI" ("Excellent") by A.M. Best. Our general liability is with Scottsdale, rated "A+ XV" (Superior) by A.M.Best and our bonding company, ACE Insurance Company, is also rated "A+" (Superior).

Technology
TechCare is NaphCare's internally developed EMR system, which can be easily customized to serve the individual needs of our customers, and was specifically designed for the correctional industry. TechCare collects and tracks inmate health care information beginning with the booking / intake screening, until the inmate has been released from the facility. Healthcare personnel are able to electronically record inmate vital statistics, current medications, and medical history, including past incarceration periods. When objective criteria are met that indicate an inmate has a specific medical or mental condition, healthcare personnel are notified by alerts (flags in the EMR system). Inmates are classified into appropriate Chronic Disease Management categories, such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS, or hypertension. TechCare ensures that the inmate receives the optimal level of care; appropriate for his/her condition.

Will NaphCare replace all current staff if chosen as the healthcare services vendor?
No. Our policy is to retain all of the local, qualified personnel in the facility. NaphCare's objective is to minimize disruption, while seamlessly integrating personnel, programs, and technology services.

What will communication be like between my correctional facility and NaphCare?
Direct communication and rapid responses are offered to our clients. Our organizational structure is streamlined, making the decision making process between on-site personnel and corporate staff expedited.
